Grain'storming

Posted on: September 13, 2011

Have you ever really thought about what a grain is? Grains are the seeds of grasses, which are cultivated for food. They come in many shapes and sizes, from large kernels of popcorn to small quinoa seeds. Grains that haven't been refined — called whole grains – have health advantages . Whole grains contain all three parts of the seed --- the bran, germ and endosperm. Refined grains only retain the endosperm, not the germ or bran.

Whole grains have been shown to have health-promoting and disease prevention benefits. Many of the health-promoting components of a grain are found in the germ and bran.
